Why Get Licensed as a Professional Engineer?

A professional engineer license is a critical credential for engineers who wish to advance their careers and demonstrate their expertise and ethical commitment. Here’s a detailed look at when and why professional engineers need to obtain a PE license:

Career Advancement

Engineers seeking to advance to higher-level positions, such as senior management roles or specialized technical positions, often require a PE license. A PE license can open doors to leadership roles and provide opportunities for increased responsibility and career growth.

Legal Requirements

In many jurisdictions, a PE license is legally required to sign and seal:

  • Engineering drawings
  • Reports
  • Documents

This is particularly important for public works and projects that require official certification of compliance with safety and quality standards.

Public Safety and Accountability

A PE license is typically required if your work directly affects the public:

  • Safety
  • Health
  • Welfare

This includes fields like civil engineering, where licensed engineers are needed to ensure the safety and reliability of infrastructure projects such as bridges, buildings, and roads.

Specialization and Expertise

Engineers who want to demonstrate their specialization in a particular field can obtain a PE license to validate their expertise. This is particularly relevant in highly regulated fields such as:

  • Environmental
  • Structural
  • Geotechnical engineering

General Requirements for Becoming a Professional Engineer

While specific requirements differ from state to state, most professional engineering licensure programs share common foundations. Typically, these programs demand:

  • A four-year bachelor of science degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam in either written or computer-based testing mode.
  • A four-year period of engineering practice under the mentorship of a professional engineer.
  • Achieving a passing score on the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam, available in traditional or computer-based delivery.

The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is a comprehensive six-hour evaluation consisting of 110 questions designed to assess an examinee’s grasp of foundational engineering principles. It is offered in seven distinct disciplines, such as:

  • Chemical
  • Civil
  • Mechanical

Most applicants take this exam during the senior year of their bachelor’s program or shortly after graduation.

A Professional Engineer’s Milestone

The NCEES oversees the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) and Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exams, both of which require fees. To be eligible for the PE exam, engineers must complete four years of supervised engineering work. This exam evaluates an applicant’s expertise in a specific engineering discipline and their understanding of engineering ethics.

Professional engineers are required to renew their licenses annually or every two years as part of ongoing education requirements.

  • Experience
  • Examination

2. Continuing Education

Specific NYS PE License Requirements for Becoming a Professional Engineer

instructor helping with NYS PE Requirements

To become a licensed Professional Engineer in New York State, you must apply to the New York State Department of Education. This application kicks off the licensing process.

Educational Requirements: Here’s What You Need to Know

You’ll need a bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering from a program that meets the state’s standards. The program should be accredited or considered substantially equivalent. Having an advanced degree can help, too, as it might count toward your work experience requirement.

Gaining Experience: What Counts Toward Your Four Years?

Before you can get your PE license, you need at least four years of professional work experience. This experience should be under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer and should demonstrate your engineering expertise. If you have additional coursework beyond your bachelor’s degree, it might help reduce the required work experience.

Pass the Exams: What Are the NYS PE Requirements for Exams?

You’ll need to pass two critical exams:

  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam is usually taken right after you complete your degree or shortly after that.
  • Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Exam is more advanced and focuses on your engineering specialty. You’ll take this after you’ve gained the necessary work experience.

Age and Citizenship Requirements: Do You Qualify?

You must be at least 21 years old and either a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the U.S.

Good Moral Character: What Does This Mean?

The Department will assess your character to ensure you meet professional and ethical standards. This typically involves providing references and background information.

Paying the Fees: What Costs Are Involved?

There’s an initial fee of $135 for your license. You’ll need to renew your license every three years with a $210 fee.

Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification: What’s the Process?

To become an EIT, you’ll need to meet similar requirements regarding application and passing the FE exam. The fee for the EIT exam and identification card is $70.

Special Considerations: What If I’ve Got Experience?

If you’ve been practicing engineering lawfully and have built a strong reputation over more than fifteen years, you might get some requirements waived. Nevertheless, the age, character, and citizenship requirements still apply.

If you’re applying within two years of the effective date of the new regulations and have twelve years of practical experience, you might be able to substitute this experience for the degree and work experience requirements. The board might allow some of your engineering studies to be counted toward your work experience.

PE Continuing Education Requirements for NYS

person talking about requirements - NYS PE Requirements

If you’re a professional engineer in New York State, you have some ongoing responsibilities to keep your license up-to-date. Here are the continuing education requirements for maintaining your license:

Total PDH Requirement

You need to earn 36 Professional Development Hours (PDH) every three years to renew your PE license. It’s a good idea to plan, as you can’t carry over any unused hours from the previous period.

Ethics Requirement

Among those 36 PDH, at least 1 hour must be dedicated to ethics. This ensures that you stay current on the professional conduct standards expected of you. You can fulfill this requirement by taking a self-paced ethics course offered online by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) or participating in other approved ethics courses.

Course Approval

While the NYSED pre-approves certain sponsors for continuing education courses, you’re responsible for ensuring that your courses meet the requirements. This means the courses should be relevant to your engineering practice and adhere to NYSED guidelines.

Record Keeping

You must maintain certificates of completion for all PDH credits you earn for at least 6 years. Although you don’t need to submit these certificates when you renew your license, you must be able to provide them if the NYSED audits you. These certificates should include details like:

  • Course title
  • Subject area
  • Course number
  • Hours completed
  • Sponsor information
  • Verification of attendance

Renewal Dates

Each engineer’s license renewal date is determined by their birth date. Consequently, the initial renewal period may be less than the standard three years. In such cases, the required number of PDH credits will correspond to the length of the shorter renewal cycle.

Types of PDH Credits

person infront of laptop - NYS PE Requirements

You need to earn 18 PDH credits from courses and 18 PDH credits from educational activities. Courses typically need to be interactive to qualify:

  • Live webinars
  • Classroom settings
  • Educational activities, like teaching a course or writing an article

These activities don’t have to be live but must include a testing component to prove completion.

Accepted Continuing Education Activities

Courses

To qualify, courses should be relevant to engineering and allow interaction with the instructor. Traditional classroom settings or live webinars are acceptable. Courses in unrelated fields like marketing or personal finance won’t count.

Educational Activities

These can include:

  • Online classes
  • Teaching approved courses
  • Writing articles
  • Giving technical presentations
  • Obtaining a patent (which can count for 9 PDH hours)

Ensure that these activities are pre-approved by NYSED and that you have proper documentation.

Finding and Approving Courses

The NYSED pre-approves sponsors, which means they have a Continuing Education Provider number. However, just because a sponsor is approved doesn’t guarantee that every course they offer will qualify for PDH credits. You must verify that each course or activity meets the NYSED requirements.

Free Resources

NYSED offers a free, self-paced ethics course, and you can also find other free continuing education courses on their website. These can help you meet your PDH requirements without breaking the bank.

To maintain your New York professional engineering license, it’s essential to keep accurate records of your PDH credits and fulfill all continuing education requirements.
