A Professional Engineer PE license is a critical credential for engineers who wish to advance their careers and demonstrate their expertise and ethical commitment. PE licensure is the highest of engineering achievement, symbolizing the highest level of competency and a steadfast commitment to quality.

The Value of a Professional Engineer (PE) License

  • Builds client trust through demonstrated credentials
  • Signals readiness for higher responsibility to employers
  • Earns respect among colleagues
  • Represents personal pride and a measure of significant achievement

Prestige: The PE License Signals Superior Knowledge and Experience

Professional Engineers (PEs) command respect within and outside the engineering community. Viewed on par with other licensed professionals, PEs are seen as experts in their field. Among peers, the PE designation is a mark of distinction, signifying a high level of competency and commitment.

Career Development: A PE License Opens Doors

A PE license is a valuable asset for engineers seeking career advancement. It signifies a high level of competency, dedication to the profession, and leadership potential. Licensure is often a prerequisite for increased authority and responsibility within engineering roles.

Authority: What You Can Do With a PE License

Only Professional Engineers (PEs) can affix their seal to engineering documents. PEs are the sole individuals qualified to lead engineering firms or provide expert testimony in legal proceedings. Many government agencies and educational institutions also emphasize licensure among their engineers.

Flexibility: Career Options With a PE License

A PE license unlocks a world of career possibilities. Engineers with a PE can specialize in their field or venture into entrepreneurship by starting their firm. The license offers job security by providing a competitive edge in challenging economic climates. A PE empowers engineers to reach their full potential, limited only by their ambition and abilities.

Financial: A PE License Boosts Your Salary

PEs consistently demonstrate higher earning potential throughout their careers. Beyond traditional employment, the PE license empowers engineers to explore independent consulting and entrepreneurial ventures, expanding career horizons and income opportunities.

Education Essentials

A strong foundation in engineering is essential for licensure. Most U.S. states require a bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited program as the first step toward becoming a Professional Engineer.

Education Considerations for PE Licensure

  • Non-accredited degrees may require additional steps for licensure
  • Engineering technology degrees may limit career opportunities compared to traditional engineering degrees

The Fundamentals of Engineering Exam

Before obtaining your professional engineer license, you must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. This test gets your foot in the door to licensure and demonstrates that you have a firm grasp of the core principles of engineering.

Timing and Scope of the FE Exam

The exam is typically offered only to students nearing graduation from their ABET-accredited engineering program or who have already graduated. The FE exam is not discipline-specific, meaning that the content covered on the test is relevant to all engineering fields. But once you pass the exam and apply for licensure, you will choose a specific discipline for your professional engineer license.

Professional Experience Under a PE

Once you have completed your FE exam, you can work towards your professional engineer license. This involves gaining at least four years of experience in your engineering field under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer. Note that this time may be reduced if you complete an ABET-accredited graduate program.

Accelerated Licensing With Advanced Degrees

If you were to earn a master’s degree in civil engineering and then complete the required work experience under a licensed PE, you may only need to work for three years before qualifying to take the civil engineering PE exam.

Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam

After completing your work experience, you can sit for the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam. This test will assess your knowledge of both the theoretical and practical applications of engineering. The PE exam is discipline-specific, so you must prepare for the version that aligns with your career goals.

Specializing Your PE License

For example, if you plan to work as a civil engineer, you will want to take the PE exam. If you pass, you can earn your license and work as a professional engineer. If you do not pass on your first attempt, don’t worry. You can retake the exam after a designated waiting period.

Regulatory Board of Pennsylvania PE Licence Certificate

The Pennsylvania PE license opens the door to a world of opportunity. It is recognized in many states nationwide, meaning that licensed engineers can work on projects across state lines without jumping through too many hoops.

The Pennsylvania PE license is governed by the State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists. This board oversees the licensing process, sets the rules for practicing engineering in the state, and enforces those rules.

Specific Pennsylvania PE License Requirements for Becoming a Professional Engineer

To become a licensed PE, you must have a bachelor’s degree in engineering from a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). If your degree is from outside the U.S., it must be equivalent to an ABET-accredited program.

Alternative Paths to Licensure

The board also accepts graduates from U.S. graduate-level programs or foreign programs if they are substantially equivalent to ABET-accredited curriculums. If your educational background is unconventional, you can still qualify if you have eight years of progressive engineering experience comparable to what you’d gain through an approved engineering curriculum.

PE Exam: Pennsylvania Requirements

You’ll need to pass two exams to become a PE. The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam tests your understanding of basic engineering principles. Many states now allow engineering students to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam near or even before graduation, provided the state board approves their engineering program.

A limited number of states offer alternative routes to licensure. Individuals possessing substantial engineering experience, typically four or more years, may qualify to take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam even without a formal engineering degree. Nonetheless, the number of states permitting non-degreed individuals to take the FE examination is dwindling. After gaining the required experience, you must pass the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam focusing on your specific engineering discipline.

Experience Requirements

Before you can sit for the PE exams, you must have been certified as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT). You’ll then need to gain at least four years of progressive engineering experience under the supervision of a licensed PE. This experience should demonstrate your ability to apply engineering principles and solve real-world problems.

Professional Engineer License by Reciprocity

If you’re already licensed as a PE in another state or country, you may be eligible for licensure by reciprocity. This means that if your current license was obtained through requirements substantially equivalent to Pennsylvania’s, you can transfer your license without having to go through the entire process again.

PE License: References

You’ll need to provide references who can attest to your work experience and qualifications—three of these must be licensed PEs. In contrast, the other two can be licensed Professional Land Surveyors, Geologists, or other qualified individuals. None of your references should be related to you.

PE Continuing Education Requirements for Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania engineers must earn 24 Professional Development Hours (PDH) every two years to maintain their license. The renewal date is September 30th of odd-numbered years. You can carry over up to 12 PDH hours into the next renewal period, giving you some flexibility if you’re close to meeting the requirements.

You can earn PDH credits through various activities, including:

  • College or University Courses: These need to be documented with a sealed transcript.
  • Professional Workshops and Seminars: These are great for earning PDH credits and staying updated in your field.
  • Online Courses: There’s no limit on how many PDH hours you can earn online as long as the content is relevant to your professional development.
  • Teaching or Presenting: You can earn PDH credits if you teach, write papers, or obtain patents.

What Else Should I Know About PE License Continuing Education Requirements in Pennsylvania?

After completing any PDH activity, keep detailed records, including:

  • Name of the provider
  • Date
  • Location
  • Instructor
  • Number of credit hours earned

You need to maintain these records for at least five years. If the Board audits you, you must provide this documentation to verify your compliance.

Optional but Valuable

While Pennsylvania doesn’t require specific ethics or professional conduct courses for PDH credits, taking these can be beneficial. They help reinforce the trust and integrity expected from engineers and are often recognized by the Board.

Stay Informed and Compliant

Your license renewal happens every two years on September 30th. Stay informed about your license renewal. The licensing board will send a reminder notice a few months before your license expires. Ensure you receive this notification by keeping your contact information up-to-date. An expired engineering license prohibits professional practice until renewed. Failure to comply with renewal regulations can result in disciplinary action.

Verify and Organize

You don’t need to get pre-approval for PDH courses from the Board. Verifying that the courses will count toward your PDH requirements before enrolling is wise. By staying organized and keeping up with these requirements, you’ll ensure your professional credentials remain in good standing and continue to benefit from ongoing education in your engineering career.
